Introduction

1. Irgun - short for Irgun Zvai Le’umi (the National Military Organization), known in Hebrew by its acronym Etzel, was an under-ground militant Zionist group opposing British rule

2. Lehi - Hebrew acronym for Lohamei Herat Israel, "Fighters for the Freedom of Israel," a radical split-off from the Irgun, also known as the Stern Gang after its leader Avraham Stern.

Before the Battle

1. Jamal Husseini - Chairman of the Arab Higher Committee, the central political organ of the Arab community of Palestine. After the flight of his uncle Grand Mufti Mohammad Amin al-Husseini, in 1937, he became the political leader of the Arabs in Palestine.

2. Nahariya - small town north of Haifa.

3. The Exodus - a ship that carried Jewish emigrants (largely Holocaust survivor refugees without immigration permits) from France to Palestine, then controlled by the British, in 1947. The refugees were refused permission to land by the British authorities, and forced to return to France, to international public outrage.
