6. Wadi - (Arabic) - a river bed that is often dry. Also used in Hebrew.

7. "Ta’al lahon!" - (Arabic) - "come here!"

8. Ramie - Arab town on the road between Tel Aviv and Jerusalem.

9. Latrun - originally "La Touronne." Christian monastery from the time of the Crusades, on the road to Jerusalem. Nearby was a British police fort and a prison camp, originally for Italian POWs.

10. Sten - short for Sten gun. A simple and easily operated submachine gun of British manufacture.

11. Finjan - (Arabic) - can for making coffee on an open fire.

12. Mukhtar - (Arabic) - village headman.

13. Nebi Musa - The Tomb of the Prophet Moses. According to Jewish, Christian, and Islamic tradition, it is said to be located on Mount Nebo, a high ridge in the Judean desert giving a panoramic view from Jericho to Jerusalem.

14. Bab al-Wad - (Arabic) - "The Gate to the Wadi," where the road to Jerusalem enters a narrow gorge and begins the climb away from the plain.

15. Cameri Theater - A travelling group from Cameri Theater, founded in 1944 in Tel Aviv, and now the biggest of Israel’s public theaters.

16. Tnuva - trade union-owned collective in dairy production.

17. Bully beef - a dry and almost tasteless sort of corned beef.

18. During the time of the British Mandate, the jail at Latrun was fre-quently used to hold underground fighters.

19. Shaar Hagai - (Hebrew) - "The Gate to the Wadi" (Arabic: Bab al-Wad).

20. Castel - ruined Crusader castle on a hill near Jerusalem, the scene of fierce fighting for control of the road.

21. Deir Yassin - Arab village which was the scene of a reprisal action by the Irgun on 9 April 1948, in which dozens of men, women, and chil-dren were killed. The news of the massacre spread panic among the Arab population, and many of them fled the country.

22. Fawzi al-Qawuqji - Syrian officer who organized his own private army and later came to notice as the leader of a Palestinian group.

23. Burma Road - road through rough mountain country, used by the British to transport war material from Burma to China.

24. Moshe Shertok - the first Israeli Foreign Minister (later changed his name to Sharet).

25. Kol Israel - (Hebrew) - "Voice of Israel," Israeli state radio.

26. Shaj - Hebrew abbreviation for "intelligence service."

27. Primus - kerosene stove, common in the East in this period.
